#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The Clean Arctic environmental project’s volunteers have removed about 4.5 tons of barrels from cape Chelyuskin; it will take at least ten years to completely clean up the territory, the project’s press service reports.
“For a month, volunteers conducted a detailed reconnaissance of the territory, made orthophotography. This is necessary in order to plan future expeditions, divide the cleanup area into squares – for more efficient work. Since there are about 40 thousand barrels on the cape, it will take up to ten years to clean it up”, the report says.
It should be noted that the project volunteers have already removed about 4.5 tons of barrels.
“In fact, we have now worked out an entire cleanup technology with the Northern Department of Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring and will recommend it as optimal for hard-to-reach places. In order not to damage the tundra surface, the volunteers rolled the barrels by hand. Then all the containers were placed in a net and delivered on board the ship by helicopter. Next season, we plan to remove about five thousand tons of environmental pollutants from cape Chelyuskin this way”, added Andrey Nagibin, the Clean Arctic public environmental project head.
The Clean Arctic public environmental project has been cleaning up the northern territories since 2021. The volunteers are focusing on the litter left over from the USSR. Waste removal is a complex technological job that takes into account the natural features of the Arctic region. In total, over three seasons, the project’s volunteers have collected 12 thousand tons of waste, TASS writes.
Earlier, we reported that a volunteer base appeared at the northernmost point of Russia.
