Arctic gets warm many times faster

Permafrost melting provokes methane emissions into the atmosphere.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The main source of methane emissions in the Northern hemisphere are the Eastern Arctic seas – this is the conclusion reached by Russian scientists. This was reported by Tatyana Polivanova, a junior research fellow at the International Scientific Center for Ecology and Climate Change at Sirius University, at a meeting between Russian president Vladimir Putin and the IV Congress of Young Scientists’ participants, TASS reports.

The reason for methane emissions is the melting of permafrost, which is located on the shelf of the Eastern Arctic seas, which is why the Arctic is warming many times faster than other regions of the world.

The shelf of the Eastern Arctic seas contains 80 percent of underwater permafrost, which has been actively degrading over the past 30 years.

Earlier, This Is Taimyr wrote about the study of climate change in the Arctic. A sharp warming could trigger the emergence of new islands in the Arctic.
