#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The work of the expedition Clean Arctic – East-77 on compiling a map of the USSR economic heritage has been completed in the Arctic. After the events, it became known that almost 400 unused structures will have to be removed in seven regions, and Chukotka and Yakutia are the leaders in the need for cleaning, Arctic Russia reports.
“The map shows abandoned objects that can cause environmental pollution. Among them there are inactive mines, airfields, port facilities where equipment, fuel tanks and various reagents are left. In total, the map shows 393 objects that require disposal in seven regions of the Arctic, and in addition to them, 311 objects were found where disposal work has already been carried out by regions or federal ministries”, said Stanislav Latchininsky, head of the cartographic group of the Clean Arctic – East-77 expedition.
The largest share of both already disposed structures and buildings, as well as those that their owners have only just begun to eliminate, was found in Yakutia and Chukotka. These two regions are leaders in terms of liquidated objects of potential environmental hazard.
The work on compiling the map was carried out by scientists from three institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences and St. Petersburg State University. The expedition participants also developed various methods for calculating the volumes of equipment and structures that must be removed along the Northern Sea Route by river or land transport, since they cannot be disposed of on site.
Let us recall that the expedition of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ institutes Clean Arctic – East-77 started in August 2023 from Murmansk, its tasks include research in the interests of several scientific teams along the route that runs through the regions of the Arctic, Northern Siberia and the Far East.
Earlier, we reported that new Russian all-terrain vehicles were tested in Taimyr.
