#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The Nornickel president Vladimir Potanin and Rosatom general director Alexey Likhachev have signed an agreement on the low-power nuclear plants construction.
The signed document stipulates that the companies will study possible options, determine the priority site for the ground station location, its configuration and the infrastructure necessary for its construction and operation, and also consider the optimal model for implementing the project.
“Nornickel and the Norilsk industrial region are developing, and therefore beyond the horizon of 2030 we will need more electricity”, Vladimir Potanin commented on the agreement. “The solution could be a nuclear power plant – a safe source of energy with minimal impact on the environment”.
According to the companies’ presidents, cooperation will allow Nornickel to gain access to advanced energy technologies, and the Rosatom state corporation will develop the use of low-power nuclear plants in remote regions of Russia.
“As part of our partnership, we plan to study the Norilsk industrial region’s needs and select the most suitable project for energy supply. A high-tech project of a low-power nuclear plant based on the latest RITM-400 reactor plant can be considered as a priority”, noted Alexey Likhachev. “Our low-power projects offer a reliable source of electricity with long-term predictable tariffs for consumers”.
RITM-400 is a project of a pressurized water nuclear reactor with a planned power of 80 to 90 megawatts, developed by the experienced mechanical engineering design bureau named after. I. I. Afrikantov, part of the Rosatom group.
According to Alexey Likhachev, nuclear energy can make a significant contribution to the fight against climate change due to the absence of CO2 emissions during the energy generation process, which is extremely important for the northern territories of our country.
