#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. A new meeting of the Norilsk Local History School students was dedicated to the topic of ethnography. The Taimyr toponymy was added to the Krasnoyarsk North peoples study.

Last year a book about Taimyr toponyms was published, in fact, it’s the result of more than ten years of work by the ethnographer, geographer and organizer of the of Local History School Larisa Stryuchkova.

At the meeting, those present also studied and learned to distinguish the Taimyr indigenous nationalities, culture, language and its origin, traditions, including the features of clothing, jewelry and ornaments.

“We believe that we have the right to talk about the sixth ethnic group of Taimyr, besides the Nenets, Dolgans, Nganasans, Enets and Evenks. This is not an indigenous ethnic group, but numerous – we call it the Russian old-time population. Along with the Yakuts and Evenks, Russian old-timers took part in the formation of the Dolgans as an independent ethnic group”, said Larisa Stryuchkova.

Another nuance of the meeting was the understanding that the very Taimyr old-time population, by all indications, came from Pomors, and this became another highlight, intrigue for lovers of the region history.

The territory exploration project itself has been successfully running for eight years. The first support was provided by Nornickel’s World of New Opportunities fund for charitable programs. For the past five years, the Local History School has been actively supported by the Presidential Grants Fund. According to the unanimous experts’ opinion, the very fact of such a long-term success at the federal level speaks of the program’s thoroughness and depth.

A vivid evidence of the project relevance is the sharply increased interest in the region history: the school’s student audience has recently increased significantly. Experts attribute this primarily to the development of tourism in the territory and the influx of guests to the peninsula, interest in Norilsk as a point of diverse active development.
