Pomor boat nail-free copy to be built in Russian Arctic

February 27, 2025

Scientists have restored a vessel found on Novaya Zemlya in 2016.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In 2026, a precise replica of a 17th-century Pomor boat, discovered on the Oranskie Islands of Novaya Zemlya, will be constructed in the Russian Arctic national park. Researchers have already fully restored the original unique vessel.

According to TASS, citing the park’s director, Alexander Kirilov, this is the only find of its kind in Russia. A total of 76 fragments have been preserved, and scientists believe the boat was crafted around 1691 on the Karelian coast of the White sea. It was sewn together using twisted cord, without a single nail.

The boat was discovered in 2016, and in 2022, the artefact was successfully transported from the archipelago via a flight from the Arctic Floating University.

In related news, new plant species have recently been added to the flora collection of Taimyr, and in 2024, invertebrate animals were discovered in the Arctic for the first time.
