Alexandra Ursulyak: “Every time I discover Norilsk anew”

September 14, 2024

Russian theater and film actress Alexandra Ursulyak, who came to Norilsk on tour, became the heroine of the Nornickel’s project A Completely Different Thing and This Is Taimyr’s project Guest Book.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The film crew met her and her husband, the famous Russian virtuoso violinist Andrey Rozendent, near the hotel, and together they went to the Octyabrsky mine.

While driving to their destination, the couple was keenly interested in the city, living conditions in the North, the climate features, and looked at the Taimyr nature outside the window. And there was a lot to see there. Alexandra, as a creative person, noted the beauty and diversity of autumn colors, and despite the changeable and cloudy weather, she was impressed by the polar landscapes of the endless tundra.

At the mine, the actress changed her clothes and listened to the introductory safety briefing, after which Alexandra went to the heart of the Octyabrsky mine – the operations center, where all the information flows: about how many personnel and units of equipment are at their workplaces and whether all of them are performing their assigned production tasks. This is possible thanks to a modern precision positioning system: sensors are built into the individual lamp on each miner’s helmet, as well as in the underground transport control device, which send a signal to the readers located in the underground part of the mine, all the information from the readers is displayed on the screen of the operations center specialist. These are the very lamps that Alexandra had to hand out.

In the lamp shop, the Moscow guest was accompanied by an experienced lamp attendant, who told her about the principles of work and the sequence of actions. It would seem that the algorithm is not complicated: take a token from a miner, give him a flashlight and a self-rescuer, or take them from a miner who has finished his shift, giving the token back. However, when you do this for the first time, you can get confused, but Alexandra grasped everything on the fly. She managed to quickly get involved in the process, and during her shift she was able to issue and accept flashlights from 20 miners, which is not bad for the first time.

Acting deputy chief technologist for ventilation – head of the Octyabrsky mine’s section Dmitry Yarovoy explained:

“The profession of a lamp attendant is important and responsible: the mine’s production indicators fulfillment depends on the employee’s attention, perseverance and correctness of actions. When handing out a battery lamp, the lamp room employees check them for serviceability and register them in the system, which is very important for monitoring the locations of personnel in mine workings and communicating with them, because with the help of the head lamp, an individual or group call of employees is made, which, in turn, makes it possible to transmit operational information and make adjustments to the production task set before the shift, taking into account all possible changes, so mistakes are allowed.

Alexandra was satisfied with herself and her new role.

“I like everything. Of course, at first you can get lost in a multitude of numbers and figures, but this is a matter of habit. If I had stayed here longer, I am sure that it would not have been difficult for me to navigate quickly and easily. As an actress, I paid attention to details, I wanted to feel what the lamp room worker feels during the shift, how tired she gets, what she thinks about. This is important in order to fully penetrate the profession,” said Alexandra.

She noted that she had found some similarities between the miners’ profession and acting.

“Film actors also film for 12 hours, like a shift for miners, we also first come to work, get ready, put on makeup, then the work itself, and after finishing we take off our makeup and only then go home. But miners have days off, and we rarely have them”, Alexandra shared the nuances of her work.

After the experiment, the actress presented the mentors with tickets to her play Good Songs and thanked them for their knowledge and experience.

“This is my second time in Norilsk and each time I discover it anew. I really liked that now I have more time, and I have even managed to immerse myself in the miner’s profession, learn more about the city and the Nornickel company. Every time I am amazed at the combination of such unusual, beautiful nature and an industrial city, how a person can get so much wealth from the depths”, Alexandra concluded.

Earlier, This Is Taimyr reported that the legendary hockey player learned about the copper production process and tried on an exoskeleton.
