Yenisey ice edge located 735 kilometers from Dudinka

May 17, 2024

Ice drift in the capital of Taimyr is expected around June 2.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. According to the regional department for civil and emergency situations, on May 17, by 08:00, the water level on the Yenisey river in the Dudinka area was 612 centimeters. Over the past 24 hours, the water has risen by 14 centimeters.

The edge of the ice on the Yenisey is now approaching the village of Vereshchagino, which is 735 kilometers from Dudinka. In 2023, it was located in the area between the villages of Verhneimbatskoye and Vereshchagino, 865 kilometers from the capital of Taimyr.

The Dudinka administration reminds the city citizens and guests of the importance of following the rules of safe behavior on reservoirs in the spring. Bonded by evening or night frost, the ice is able to withstand a small load in the morning, but during the day, under the sun rays, it becomes porous and very weak, although it retains sufficient thickness. It is dangerous to go out onto unsurveyed ice; if you need to cross, you have to use an ice pick to check the ice strength. You have to be especially careful when going down from the shore – the ice may be connected to the land not tightly, cracks are possible, and there may be air under the ice. Ice is also fragile near water drainage, in places where vegetation is located, under snowdrifts.
