Winter in Norilsk takes its rights

October 25, 2023

The thermometer will show -10 degrees and below in the coming days.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. October 2023 turned out to be special – soft and warm. Norilsk and Taimyr were in the grip of an anticyclone, there were thaws, the snow was melting. Usually winter comes to our region at the beginning of October or end of September, but not this time.

Temperatures in the second month of autumn remained mainly in the range from 0 to +7 degrees, heavy rainfall, drifts and snowstorms were not observed.

And only in the last week of the month winter seemed to remember its northern “staff schedule” and was about to take over its legal rights.

This week a permanent snow cover has established in the city, and this always means the onset of a strong “minus”.

Severe frosts are still ahead, but even today in the city it is already -6 degrees, which feels like -10. In the coming days, judging by weather forecasters, we can expect a further drop in air temperature. Tomorrow in Norilsk it will already be 10–12 degrees below zero, on Friday -14, by Sunday it will get colder to -18.

Experienced Norilsk residents know that it is hardly worth waiting for warming, especially since in a month the Arctic territory will be under the rule of the polar night.
