Wild animals to be vaccinated

September 25, 2020

The vaccine against rabies has already been sent to Norilsk, Turuhansk, Igarka and Taimyr.

Veterinarians sent the rabies vaccine for wild animals to the north of the region. The head of the regional veterinary inspection service Mikhail Kilin told about this.

This is the second time the procedure has taken place in the region. Experts lay out food with a vaccine in the habitats of predators. After three weeks, the animals develop immunity. To maximize the effect, vaccination takes place in autumn and spring. This year, specialists will cover 30 districts of the region where rabies cases were registered.

“More than 400 thousand doses of the vaccine were purchased for this. To the north of the region – Norilsk, Turuhansk, Igarka and Taimyr – the baits have already been sent by water transport”, Mikhail Kilin said.

The veterinary inspection noticed the effect of vaccination. Last year, 43 cases of rabies were registered in the region, and in 2020 – only 15. As a rule, foxes carry the infection. Let us remind you that in Norilsk in winter, Arctic foxes often enter the city in search of food.
