#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Participants in the North Pole – 42 expedition, which is taking place on an ice-resistant self-propelled platform, are being carried eastward by the drift, contrary to the expected westward direction. This was reported by Alexander Makarov, director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), to TASS.
While waiting for a rotation, the researchers will seize the opportunity to collect data in areas that Russian scientists haven’t visited since 2007. Currently, the rotation is complicated by the drift route, as the expedition is located far from airports.
The area where the scientists are drifting will provide valuable insights into the ice conditions, which are changing significantly and impacting the operations of the Northern Sea Route.
It’s important to note that by 2030, cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route is projected to exceed 100 million tons.
