#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. During an expedition to study biodiversity, specialists from the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences discovered a previously unknown species of weevil in the Big Norilsk region. This was announced by Stanislav Seleznev, vice president for ecology and industrial safety at Nornickel.
“During the expedition, interesting observations and discoveries occurred. Red Book animals are discovered that have not been seen before. And a new species of weevil was found near Norilsk”, he said.
This is a fairly significant discovery, since not many insect species are common in the Far North. Scientists will have to not only describe the new species, but also come up with a name for it, TASS writes.
Let us remind you that the study of biodiversity is carried out jointly by Nornickel and the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and covers the regions where the company operates – the Kola peninsula, the north of the Krasnoyarsk region and Transbaikalia. Researchers are assessing the biodiversity of ecosystems near production sites.
We previously reported that five rare species of birds were found in Norilsk.
