#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The Baltic Shipyard will lay down the next universal nuclear icebreaker of Project 22220 on the Leningrad Blockade Day, January 27. The new ship will be named in honor of the hero city, the Federation Council chairman Valentina Matvienko said in her Telegram channel.
“You know, I have always been amazed at the breadth of soul of our blockade survivors – at meetings they are embarrassed to ask for themselves, but they invariably think about how else they can perpetuate the memory of the city and its residents’ feat. In the summer, veterans asked to name one of the ships after Leningrad. The request was supported by the president. And in a week, on the eve of our Leningrad Victory, a new nuclear icebreaker will be solemnly laid down. And its name will be Leningrad”, noted Valentina Matviyenko.
Project 22220 icebreakers are being built by order of the Rosatom company and are the largest and most powerful in the world. The vessels will contribute to the opening of year-round navigation in the eastern sector of the Northern Sea Route.
Three nuclear icebreakers of Project 22220 – Arctica, Sibir and Ural – have already been built and are in operation.
As part of Project 22220, the nuclear-powered icebreakers Yakutia (2024) and Chukotka (2026) are being prepared for commissioning. Another future ship will be named Stalingrad – a decision on this, at the request of the Volgograd regional council of veterans, was made by Russian president Vladimir Putin, reports Maritime News of Russia.
