#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The temperature increase in the Arctic by the end of the 21st century may be from six to ten degrees, while winter will become shorter, the Russian Academy of Sciences’s P. P. Shirshov Oceanology Institute’s press service reported, as quoted by TASS.
“According to research conducted by scientists from the Oceanology Institute and the Karelian Scientific Center’s North Water Problems Institute, the temperature in the western part of the Russian Arctic has increased by two to four degrees since the middle of the 20th century and by the end of the 21st century may increase by another six to ten degrees with further growth of greenhouse gas emissions. The analysis allowed us to draw conclusions about significant climate change in the region under study – in particular, the amount of precipitation has increased there and there has been an accelerated increase in temperature. Moreover, in the next 30 years, this warming will continue and will amount to two to three degrees, little depending on the greenhouse gas emission scenario”, the report says.
The scientists note that the Arctic climate, analyzed by scientists for the period from 1940 to 2099, is experiencing warming on a secular scale. This trend is most noticeable in the north of the studied region of the Russian Arctic’s western part. The so-called Arctic warming amplification is manifested in the fact that the temperature in the Arctic is growing faster than the average on the planet.
“The studied spatiotemporal dynamics of temperature and humidity growth in the western part of the Russian Arctic tends to spread from west to east, which can be explained by the increasing influence of the North Atlantic on the studied region, the so-called atlantification. At the same time, the strongest increase in surface air temperature was observed in November and April, which indicates a shift in the boundaries of the seasons – a later start of winter and an earlier end”, the institute noted.
Earlier, This Is Taimyr reported that a new found current is accelerating the warming of the Arctic.
