#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In the Kara sea, hydrographers recorded the exact location of the transport ship Dixon, torpedoed by a German submarine in 1943.
The ship, sunk 80 years ago, was discovered during the complex expedition Remember the War, which was carried out by a research team of the Northern Fleet and the Russian Geographical Society. The search was carried out from the hydrographic vessel Romuald Muklevich, which set out on an Arctic voyage from the village of Mishukovo, Murmansk region, in the Yugorsky Shar strait direction.

“Previously, just the approximate location of the Dixon’s death was known, but in the course of additional painstaking work, this place was established precisely, and a number of studies have already been carried out on it”, TASS reports, citing the Northern Fleet’s press service.
In addition, the expedition members discovered near the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, in the area of the Yugorsky Shar strait, the rescue ship Shkval, which also sank in 1943 after being blown up by mines. As the researchers explain, not all ships that perished during the war in the harsh waters of the Arctic have been discovered today. The Remember the War expedition planned to find them.
We previously reported that a sea rescue base would appear in Dixon. Another seaport will be built on Taimyr.
