Smoke from fires in Yakutia reached Norilsk and Dudinka

August 03, 2021

Residents complain that due to the haze they have a sore throat and watery eyes.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In all Norilsk districts, the smell of burning has been felt for several days. The residents of Dudinka also report this.

There is not a single active fire in the surrounding forest-tundra now. Most likely, the east and southeast winds bring smoke from Yakutia, where 171 natural fires are currently raging, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations. According to the department, over the past few days, firefighters manage to cope with 12–15 fires per day.

“Your wind direction is southeast and east now, the smoke is most likely from Yakutia”, said a forecaster of the Krasnoyarsk Hydrometeorological Center Dmitry Ulyanov.

In his opinion, the smell and fumes will disappear when the wind changes its direction to the west. However, according to the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, the wind in Norilsk will change to northwest and west only on Saturday or Sunday. Therefore, the situation is unlikely to change for the better in the coming days.
