#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Chinese researchers led by Nanjing University Associate Professor Zhu Bing are testing a material that protects snow and ice from sunlight. The tests took place on the Dagu glacier at an altitude of 4.8 kilometers above sea level.
Covering glaciers with rolls of reflective material is not a new idea. This has been done at ski resorts in Europe for almost 20 years. However, researchers from the Celestial Empire are making the method of combating warming more technologically advanced, TASS writes with reference to Bloomberg.
The film is made from cellulose acetate. It is a natural fiber that comes from plants. The substance can also be sprayed in the form of an aerosol from drones in hard-to-reach areas.
Previous tests have shown that the material reduces melting by 50 to 70 percent. The results of the new test on the Dagu glacier will be known in autumn. Scientists expect that the reflectance of sunlight will be more than 93 percent.
