Scientists predict abnormally cold winters in Siberia

November 17, 2020

The cooling was caused by the reduction in the area of the Arctic sea ice.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Reduction in the area of Arctic sea ice in October will lead to cooling and abnormally cold winters in Siberia and European Russia in December and January.

Russian scientists found that observing ice in the Arctic can predict the onset of abnormal frosts.

“The study of the role of the reduction in the Barents and Kara Seas ice cover area in changing the regime of the atmosphere action centers – primarily the Scandinavian anticyclone, which is responsible for the Arctic invasions formation in the north of Eurasia, leads to the conclusion about intraseasonal patterns, which are important to take into account when developing medium-term forecasts”, – noted the scientists.

At the same time, the ice factor does not affect the weather in February and March: the thermal contrasts in the surface layer level out and the ice area increases in the second half of winter. This creates conditions for the activation of other mechanisms associated primarily with the influence of the stratospheric vortex.

A gradual rise in temperature is expected in Norilsk this week. The temperature will rise to minus 7. It will be snowy all week, and the south wind will blow at a speed of 3-6 meters per second, Roshydromet reports.
