#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Scientists of the Arctic Floating University (AFU) met a lop-tailed gull in the south of the Barents sea – in Russia, these birds usually nest in Taimyr and to the east.
“The closest nesting site in the Russian Arctic in the East will be the very north of Severnaya Zemlya, where I found the only nest in 2019. It flies here quite rarely”, reports TASS with reference to Maria Gavrilo, leading researcher at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
How the bird got to the south of the Barents sea is unknown. The migration routes of these populations are not fully understood.
Previously, scientists studied the formation of soils on the Arctic islands, and also looked for giant viruses in the Arctic.
