Scientific station to open in Russian Arctic national park

May 15, 2024

It will work on Alexandra Land island.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. On Alexandra Land island of the Franz Josef Land archipelago the first comprehensive scientific station of the Russian Arctic national park will be created – the territory belongs to the organization. This is a joint project of the national park and the Russian Geographical Society.

Some equipment has already been delivered there, the rest will be brought by the end of summer 2024. The station will operate at the Omega field base.

Scientists at the station will continue monitoring polar bears, their numbers, health and the condition of their dens in 2024, TASS writes.

In addition, the base will conduct research in the fields of geology, seismology, permafrost science, and marine biology.

The station will allow the development of the concept of citizen science in the Arctic, according to which any activist will be able to help scientists by performing tasks that do not require special education.

Earlier it became known that funding for Arctic reserves would be increased multiple times. Scientists have found carnivorous mushrooms from the time of dinosaurs in amber from Taimyr.
