#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Over the course of three years, the Russian Northern Fleet’s expedition found almost fifty ships of the last century at the bottom of the Arctic. The fleet’s hydrographic service’s Arctic research department’s head, captain first rank Alexey Kornis, spoke about this.
“During the expedition, the fleet’s tasks were combined with the search and examination of ships and vessels that sank in the Arctic during the Great Patriotic War. In several stages, specialists studied the Ura-Guba and Ara-Guba areas, the Barents and Kara seas, the White Sea throat, the Rybachy peninsula, Novaya Zemlya, Pechenga and others”, the SeverPost news agency quoted him as saying.
According to Kornis, in total, the expedition members discovered 49 ships and boats, and also calculated the coordinates at which another 43 ones sank.
In May 2023, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that in the Barents sea, the Northern Fleet’s expedition found the remains of the Soviet Union’s research fleet’s first ship, the Perseus, which had been sunk by a German air strike after delivering military cargo to the Rybachy peninsula at the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. Before founding, the ship was considered completely lost.
