#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The oldest shipbuilding enterprise of Russia Admiralty Shipyards has chosen the Nevsky Design Bureau as the designer of the unique research expedition vessel Ivan Frolov.
The Russian government will allocate 39.7 billion rubles for the construction of the world’s largest research vessel for the northern fleet. It has already been given a name – Ivan Frolov – in honor of the long-term director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI). The new flagship will replace the 35-year-old ship Akademik Fedorov.
“The displacement of the ship will be about 25,000 tons, the length is 164.8 meters, it will carry the cargo necessary for polar explorers, deliver up to 170 researchers. The ship is designed to work in difficult conditions of the polar latitudes, including as an icebreaker, – Alexander Makarov, the AARI director, told Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
The flag on the ship is planned to be raised as early as 2028. The vessel will house 20 modern laboratories, a helipad for the heavy Mi-8, Mi-38 and Ka-32. The construction will be carried out by the Admiralty Shipyards – shipbuilders from St. Petersburg previously built the world’s only self-propelled ice scientific platform North Pole – now it is drifting with polar explorers at the station North Pole 41.
