#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Arctic Day, or Cold Day, is celebrated in Russia on February 28. It was first celebrated in 2011 in St. Petersburg and Naryan-Mar, and later Murmansk and Moscow joined.
The Russian Arctic territory begins with Franz Josef Land in the northwest and extends to Wrangel and Herald islands in the east – almost a third of the entire Arctic shelf.
The Arctic zone of the Russian Federation includes the territories of municipalities of the Arhangelsk and Murmansk regions, the Nenets, Chukotka and Yamalo-Nenets autonomous districts, the Komi Republic, the territory of several districts of Saha (Yakutia) Republic, the cities of two districts of the Krasnoyarsk region and Norilsk. In addition, the Russian Arctic zone includes the lands and islands of the Arctic ocean.
The main goal of Arctic Day is to popularize expeditions to the North, scientific research, draw attention to the problems of preserving the nature of this unique region and its original culture, as well as the livelihoods of Arctic communities. This day also honors the indigenous peoples who live in Arctic conditions.
The Arctic nature is harsh, unique and inimitable. Its breathtaking icy landscapes, wild inhabitants and unique phenomena attract tourists from all over the world. Every year the holiday geography expands.
