Rosnedra corporation sees Arctic as resource base for 20–50 years

March 11, 2024

The potential of mineral reserves in the Arctic and continental shelf is 10–20 percent explored.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The Rosnedra head, Evgeny Petrov, said that the agency sees great potential for mineral reserves on the continental shelf of the Russian Federation and in the Arctic. Now there are many geological “blank spots” in these territories; only 10–20 percent of the potential has been explored.

“This is a resource base not even for the next 20–50 years, but much longer. It’s not just oil and gas. We’re already seeing iron-manganese nodules in the Arctic ocean that we haven’t assessed at all yet”, he said. “These are our Far Eastern seas. This is a potential that we have not yet realized, with which we are not yet working”, TASS quotes the speaker as saying.

Earlier, Rosnedra approved the construction of the first underground oil storage facility in Taimyr. Giant gas and oil fields may be discovered in Taimyr.
