The initiative will require public comment. This was stated by the first vice-speaker – chairman of the Committee on state structure, legislation and local self-government of the Krasnoyarsk region Legislative Assembly Sergey Popov, TASS reports.
“The suggestion requires broad public discussion and an agreed position, this cannot be accepted without it. This issue concerns not only the Krasnoyarsk region, but the entire country”, Popov said.
The archipelago was discovered on September 4, 1913 by the Vilkitsky hydrographic expedition. In 1914 it was named the Land of Emperor Nicholas II, one of the islands was named the island of Tsarevich Alexey. In 1926, the archipelago was renamed into Severnaya Zemlya, the island of Tsarevich Alexey – into Maly Taimyr island. The archipelago area is about 37 thousand square meters.
We will remind, earlier the This Is Taimyr reported that a letter was sent to the authorities of the Krasnoyarsk region with a proposal to return the former, tsarist name – Emperor Nicholas II to the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago. The idea was supported by the legendary explorer Fyodor Konyuhov, Bishop Jacob of Naryan-Mars, the head of the Two-Headed Eagle organization Konstantin Malofeev and the granddaughter of the renowned Arctic explorer Boris Vilkitsky – Irina Tikhomirova.
