#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. This year, the 90th anniversary of the opening of regular shipping along the Northern Sea Route is celebrated. The Krasnoyarsk region history is inextricably linked with this grandiose project, fully implemented by our state.
It was the Yenisey Siberia that became the most important stage on the way to the development of the shortest route from the Atlantic ocean to the Pacific one, through the polar ice. Before caravans of ships could safely make their way through the hummocks, many expeditions perished.
The Arctic Expeditions of the 1920-30s new online project is intended to tell about the heroic feat of polar explorers and sailors. Why did the authors choose this time interval? Because it was in that decade that the young Soviet state, bled dry by the Civil War, was able to make a real breakthrough in the exploration and development of the Arctic.
The project exposition includes the first Kara voyages routes maps, icebreaking ships photographs, the Arctic expanses conquerors’ voices archive, a virtual route from Arhangelsk to Vladivostok.
We add that this year the Krasnoyarsk region is also celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Yenisey Governorate founding. Throughout the year, events dedicated to the memorable date are held in the region and beyond.
Earlier, we reported that Russia is increasing the Northern Sea Route’s cargo turnover.
In the History Spot section, we told that in 1970 the whole country followed the first winter voyage along the Northern Sea Route – from Murmansk to Dudinka. Year-round navigation along the Arctic transport artery dates back to the spring of 1978.
