#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In the vicinity of lake Sobachye on the Putorana plateau, a rare Red Book orchid Calypso bulbosa (L.) Oakes was found. As reported in the Taimyr Nature Reserves directorate, in our region this is a vulnerable species that is declining in numbers. The flower was found by inspector Andrey Ermakov.
As Elena Pospelova, the chief researcher and candidate of biological sciences, said, calypso grows in the forests of Eurasia and North America, but is rare in mixed, shady forests. The discovered plant grows on the mountainside, in an alder-willow forest, on the border with alder thickets.
In Krasnoyarsk, calypso grows only south of the Lower Tunguska river, and only rare, isolated flowers are found.
“Our find is the northernmost known in Asia; the discovery of this rare orchid in the Subarctic of Siberia itself is amazing! The origin of the population is not yet entirely clear; most likely, it was introduced either by humans or animals. To clarify, additional research and strict security are required”, the expert explained.
