Polar explorers grow greenery

January 12, 2023

Scientists are engaged in gardening in their free from research time.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Researchers harvested fresh herbs at the height of the polar night at the Cape Baranov Ice Base research station, which is located on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.

The expedition season lasts six months, and polar explorers spend their free time doing their favorite hobbies. This was reported in the press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI).

Useful greens rich in vitamins were grown by Anastasia Kirillova, hydrochemist of the station. This is not the first time that the crop is harvested here, it all falls into the polar explorers’ dishes. After Anastasia’s departure for the mainland, meteorologist Marina Loskutova took over the garden baton.

Recall that scientists are studying the arctic plants adaptation to cold conditions.

Earlier, we told about new discoveries in the Arctic that researchers made in 2022.

In Russia, a three-dimensional map of underwater permafrost will be created.
