January 22, 2025

The previous record for transportation volume has been exceeded by 1.6 million tons.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In 2024, cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) in the eastward direction increased by 69 percent, the Russian Far East Development Ministry head Alexey Chekunkov reported in his Telegram channel.

“For specialists, the Northern Sea Route has two very different dimensions: the western route, relatively comfortable, and the eastern one, in the ice, the very one where the Chelyuskin crew members were rescued. Cargo traffic along this difficult part of the NSR increased by 69 percent in 2024, transit – by 44 percent. We are conquering the ice”, he wrote.

As TASS reports, citing Vladimir Panov, special representative of the Rosatom state corporation for the development of the Arctic, deputy chairman of the state commission for the development of the Arctic, 37.9 million tons of cargo were transported along the Northern Sea Route in 2024, which is 1.6 million tons more than the previous record.

The number of transit voyages also set a record: there were 92 of them last year. The volume of transit cargo exceeded three million tons, which is one and a half times more than the year before.

We previously reported that in 2024, the Dudinka-Krasnoyarsk cruise became the most expensive.
