Northern children involved in programming

December 17, 2020

The first in the region IT-Cube - the center of digital education for children - started working in Norilsk.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. At least 400 students a year will study there for free. This is a modern institution of additional education, where the IT market leaders’, such as Yandex.Lece, the CISCO network academy, Codwards, Algorithmika, ALRIA (Association of Laboratories for the Development of Artificial Intelligence), experience is used.

The students were provided with advanced equipment: high-performance computers, virtual reality helmets, graphic tablets, motion tracking suits, equipment for a network laboratory, as well as everything necessary for audio and video production.

Schoolchildren can study in IT-Cube.Norilsk in the following areas: programming in Python (one of the most popular programming languages), virtual and augmented reality, mobile development, programming fundamentals, artificial intelligence, system administration, cyberhygiene, algorithmic and logic fundamentals. Education is free for children aged 7 to 18, depending on the study area. During the academic year, the center plans to train at least 400 schoolchildren, and more than a thousand teenagers will be involved in the events, the Ministry of Education of the region reports.

To become a student of IT-Cube, you should apply on its official website itcube.io. A competition will be held to recruit students before the school year start. For example, a competition for the Yandex.Lyceum numbered seven people per place. The child’s interest and level of knowledge will be determined by the teachers during the interview.

The teachers were chosen thoroughly – the selection for this position began in the spring. Before the opening of the center, the teachers managed to undergo training, draw up educational programs, take part in completing their classrooms, and also get acquainted with the experience of colleagues from other cities of the country where such centers are already operating.

Last year, there were a little more than 20 IT-Cubes in Russia, by the end of this year there are already more than 70, and by 2024 it’s going to be at least 340. Institutions from different cities are constantly exchanging experience, holding joint competitions and educational events. Now Norilsk is actively involved in this network – students and teachers will regularly communicate with colleagues from all over the country.
