Over three years, the company has allocated more than 50 million rubles to support communities and purchase construction materials and equipment.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In September, a working trip took place around the villages of the rural settlement of Hatanga, following which the Nornickel company will draw up a support action plan in 2024.

The rural settlement of Hatanga consists of eight villages. In three of them there is domestic reindeer herding; people there lead a nomadic lifestyle.

Even though Nornickel does not operate in the rural settlement of Hatanga, the company’s authorities decided to allocate a charitable donation of 20 million rubles to the villages. The first aid was sent in 2022 to the villages of Popigai and Kresty. The communities that are part of the coordination council and live in these villages purchased building materials to insulate 75 houses and cover them with siding.

“In all the villages of Hatanga, the housing stock is 85 percent dilapidated and in disrepair. Construction is underway using funds from the regional budget, but we understand that this is not enough, so the company is now ready to provide additional assistance”, noted Anfisa Nikiforova, head of the department for work with indigenous peoples of the North at the Polar Branch of Nornickel.

In 2022, the company allocated another 20 million rubles. Of these, 1.5 million are for the anniversary of the Kresty village, which turns one hundred years old in 2024, and 18.5 million rubles are for the purchase of refractory bricks for repairing stove heating. By the end of 2023, about a thousand families will get the material.

Nornickel also provides assistance to nomads to preserve domestic reindeer herding – this topic was raised at a meeting with company representatives by reindeer herders from the villages of Popigai, Syndassko, and Novorybnaya.

The pastures are depleted, the number of deer is falling, and if you don’t help Hatanga’s reindeer herding now, in a couple of years it may disappear completely. Nornickel allocated 10 million rubles for the development of this industry: for reindeer herders they have already purchased snowmobile equipment, gasoline, solar panels, workwear, rubber boats, new stoves, and a vitamin complex for females and calves. All this will be delivered in October 2023.

In September, Nornickel representatives flew around all the villages again.

“Meetings were held in rural clubs, people wanted to hear what kind of help the company provides. We talked about our interaction and our plans for 2024. Assistance is also provided to the development of communities in the territory.

The coordination council includes about 20 communities that carry out traditional types of economic activities on the territory of the Hatanga rural settlement. About 10 million rubles were allocated to communities to prepare for the season and strengthen the material and technical base. All proposals were heard, together with the residents of the villages we will work out a plan for the next year and present it to the Polar Branch head for consideration”, summed up Anfisa Nikiforova.

Earlier it became known that Nornickel increased assistance to the indigenous peoples of Taimyr – the company allocated 1.3 billion rubles for support. Nornickel implements more than 40 events in Taimyr. We also reported that the first potato harvest was harvested from open ground near Hatanga.
