October 17, 2022

The company presented its work results at the environmental forum.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. At the IX Ecological Forum in Moscow, the company’s vice president for working with the Nornickel’s investment community, Vladimir Zhukov, spoke about the climate change and the company’s specialized priorities.

“We said that there is a global requirement – to reduce carbon emissions. The company has a good starting position in this matter, we have a low carbon mark. But this does not mean that we are not expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, because we are already the best in the industry”, said Vladimir Zhukov. “In connection with the climate change, scenarios in this area were approved that the company will use for analysis and forecasting: now there are a number of projects that are being developed”.

He presented the work result – the scenarios of socio-economic development that Nornickel chose as basic.

“We chose three scenarios that were localized for the Norilsk industrial region, because there are the most significant physical risks. The precipitation and snow cover increase is expected which means the soils thawing probability is high”, said Vladimir Zhukov.

The first scenario is the non-renewable fuel sources rejection, its probability is 25 percent. The second is a decrease in demand for palladium, the company has chosen it as a base one and noted that the decrease would not be critical. There is also an extreme scenario – if the world continues to act in the same way as now, the economy will grow as well as ambient temperature.

“Climate change is an inevitable process. Therefore, we work out all the predicted risks and study the possibilities of their neutralization”, Vladimir Zhukov summed up.

Earlier, This Is Taimyr said that Nornickel is ready to participate in pilot environmental projects, this was announced on the eco-forum in Moscow, which was organized by the company.
