Nobel laureate warns of viruses emerging from permafrost

February 17, 2025

A prominent scientist has stated that humanity is unprepared for the potential release of ancient viruses as ice and permafrost continue to melt.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Rae Kwon Chung, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former advisor to the UN Secretary-General on climate change, expressed his concerns in an interview with RIA Novosti. He indicated that we might see the emergence of such viruses in Greenland, northern Canada, and Russia, and he believes we are not ready to confront them.

Chung noted that it is currently unknown what viruses might be lurking in the ice. For instance, anthrax spores can remain viable in permafrost and represent just one possible threat.

He also mentioned that several years ago, a scientific report suggested that the melting of ice could release hundreds of forgotten viruses that humanity has long overlooked.

In related news, we previously reported that participants in a winter field school are studying the impact of snow on the permafrost condition.
