#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The president of the Russian Federation, via teleconference, put into trial operation the new wintering complex of the Russian Vostok station in Central Antarctica.
A unique complex with laboratories, a cinema hall, a gym, a medical unit and a powerful power plant will appear on the southern continent of the planet. The station will allow a large group of scientists to live year-round. This is stated on the Kremlin’s official website.
Let us remind you that there are now five year-round Russian scientific stations operating in Antarctica. The southernmost is the inland station Vostok, it was founded in 1957. Now the updated Vostok has been built in its place.
With its launch into trial operation, six expedition members and three dozen technicians will remain at the base for the winter, they will test the reliability of all life support systems.
“This is a big and significant event for our polar scientists and for the whole country”, Putin said and added that this is an important event for the Belarusian allies as well. According to the president, Russian researchers and pioneers in the continent development take one of the key places.
“It is enough to mention the Russian expedition led by naval officers Bellingshausen and Lazarev, who discovered this icefloe continent, as they themselves called it, just over two centuries ago”, the president gave an example.
According to Putin, both Russia and Belarus are proud of this history of achievements. Our scientists have been constantly working in Antarctica since 1955. They have hundreds of greatest discoveries, the president noted.
