#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has developed new security measures for ships in the Arctic and Antarctic waters. The requirements also apply to the fishing fleet.
From 21 to 30 June, the ninth session of the IMO Subcommittee on Navigation, Communications, Search and Rescue (NCSR9) was held via videoconference. The Russian delegation took part in the session.
“The Subcommittee has successfully completed work begun in 2018 on the development of a requirements’ set for the safety of ships operating in Arctic waters and the Antarctic region, which are not covered by the SOLAS Convention. We are talking about cargo ships with a gross tonnage of 300 to 500, fishing vessels with a length of 24 meters or more and non-commercial pleasure yachts with a gross tonnage of 300 or more”, said the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation.
The amendments to Chapter XIV of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the Polar Code include requirements for navigational equipment, anti-icing measures and voyage planning.
The amendments are expected to enter into force on January 1, 2026, following their adoption by the Maritime Safety Committee. At the same time, for existing vessels, the new requirements will apply from January 1, 2027.
Earlier we told that the ship repair capacities’ shortage is brewing in the Arctic and the Far East and how shipping will be affected by a warming in the Arctic.
