#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. A new research vessel, Ivan Frolov, has been laid down at the Admiralty Shipyards. It will become the flagship of Roshydromet and the base for a powerful research complex. In this position, it will replace the current flagship, Akademik Fedorov.
The vessel’s hull will be 165 meters long, with a displacement of about 25 thousand tons, TASS reports. The vessel will house up to 20 research laboratories, a helipad, and a hangar for two helicopters. About 240 people will be able to work on the ship – crew members and special personnel. The vessel will be able to independently navigate difficult Arctic ice without the help of icebreakers, and will serve for at least 30 years.
The scientific complex Ivan Frolov will allow research into waters, the ocean floor, the atmosphere and even space, and will ensure the uninterrupted operation of Roshydromet polar stations.
The ship was named after the scientist Ivan Frolov (1949 – 2020) – geographer, oceanologist, glaciologist, polar explorer, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, laureate of the O. Yu. Schmidt Prize, head of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
Earlier, we talked about the new method of Arctic expeditions participants selection.
