The head of the region appealed to the governor of the Yamal-Nenets autonomous okrug Dmitry Artyukhov with a request to transfer ten musk ox calves from the Polyarno-Uralsky Natural Park. The animals are needed to create the first experimental farm in Russia for the domestication of musk oxen.
The initiator of the ethno-village project in the Volochanka settlement is a member of the Husky-Tyal family-clan community of indigenous minorities, the director of the village school Denis Terebikhin. He has a small reindeer wool processing facility. But the musk oxen undercoat is much more attractive in terms of thermal conductivity. However, taking this material from wild animals is impossible. So the idea to create a home farm appeared.
A plot of land with an area of 118 thousand hectares has already been allocated for the project. The farm will provide the residents of Volochanka with new jobs and will partially help in the restoration of the population of musk oxen in Taimyr. Moreover, the farm will contribute to the development of the local tourism, Denis Terebikhin is sure. Ten musk ox calves will be delivered to Taimyr in autumn.
As the This Is Taimyr wrote earlier, musk oxen were first brought to Taimyr in 1974. The animals donated to the Soviet Union by Canada were located near the Bikada River.
In 2005, an experiment for relocation the Taimyr musk oxen to the Magadan region started. And last year the Taimyr Nature Reserves directorate celebrated the 45th anniversary of the experiment to restore the population of these animals on the peninsula.
