ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The military personnel of the Eastern Military District consolidated environmental unit have begun cleaning up Wrangel island from scrap metal. 45 military ecologists are equipped with the necessary equipment and supplies.
The military set up a camp for living and work. The servicemen are faced with the task of collecting, compacting, preparing and transporting by ships about 215 tons of scrap metal. The Eastern Military District’s environmental unit operates in the area of the former Zvezdny airfield and in Doubtful bay, the Eastern Military District’s press service reports.
The Russian Geographical Society’s representatives and the Northern Fleet environmental platoon are also participating in the cleaning of the island. The cleaning is carried out as part of the Arctic General Cleaning second stage.
“Participants have to collect large barrels of fuel and lubricants on the island in the area of Cape Hawaii. With the help of special equipment for plasma cutting of metal, the Russian Geographical Society specialists will dismantle massive metal structures and, after pressing, the scrap will be delivered to the mainland for subsequent disposal”, the Russian Geographical Society reports.
In parallel with the cleaning, scientists from the RGS will study the ecological state of the island and assess the level of anthropogenic impact on the ecosystem.
