#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The world’s largest iceberg A23a, which broke off from the Antarctic glacier back in 1986 and came out into the open ocean more than a year ago, has lost about nine percent of its area during its drift in open water.
“The world’s largest iceberg A23a continues to drift approximately 300 kilometers from South Georgia island. It is noticeable that the iceberg has recently begun to shrink in size due to melting; during its drift in open water since November 2023, it has lost about nine percent of its area”, said Polina Soloshchuk, chief specialist in ice and hydrometeorological information at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
In 2024, A23a covered a distance of approximately 1.4 thousand kilometers. During the Antarctic winter (July-August), its drift slowed down, as the iceberg got into an ocean vortex, which is confined to the Peary Bank. Experts call this phenomenon the Taylor vortex, TASS writes.
Recall that the A23a iceberg is the largest on the planet, almost twice the area of St. Petersburg.
