#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. A large sedimentary cover was found on the shelf of the Laptev sea.
According to the Rosgeology head, Sergey Gorkov, last year the company carried out seismic surveys in the Arctic in the course of work to determine the outer boundaries of the continental shelf of Russia. In the Laptev sea, on the Arctic shelf, experts discovered a large sedimentary cover with oil and gas potential with a capacity of about 10-12 kilometers.
“We have found a region on the Arctic shelf with the potential of several oil and gas fields. The discovered sedimentary cover is so powerful that a similar one can be found only in Western Siberia. This is a unique geological event, a real sensation in terms of understanding Arctic geology”, he said.
The head of Rosgeology also noted that for an accurate understanding of the situation, the region needs to be properly studied by conducting a seismic survey of higher density.
“But the question here is what cycle we will get into, because the opportunity for such work in the Arctic is very limited – only a month and a half in the summer. We are ready to do this work this year”, concluded Sergey Gorkov.
As This Is Taimyr previously wrote, the scientist told when the release of methane deposits will occur in the Arctic.
