#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. A photo exhibition has opened in the Monchegorsk history museum to mark the 95th anniversary of the Lapland reserve founding, one of the largest protected natural areas in Northern Europe. It was created on January 17, 1930, to preserve the wild reindeer population and the landscape in an untouched, pristine state. Several archaeological sites of the Sami people are also under protection.

The exhibition Lapland Reserve is 95 presents new photographs taken by the reserve staff during field research, historical photographs. Visitors can see landscapes of the Kola peninsula, portraits of the inhabitants of the protected forest and tundra, rare and unique plants. Among the historical shots are photographs of the outstanding naturalist Oleg Semenov-Tyan-Shansky, who devoted more than 60 years of his life to studying the territory of the Lapland reserve, as well as the founder and first director of the nature reserving organization Herman Kreps.

Today, the reserve remains an untouched corner of wild nature, home to the western population of wild reindeer. Their number is about a thousand individuals – one third of the total number of wild reindeer in the Murmansk region.

Three thousand individuals is not much, according to scientists of the Kola peninsula, and one of the priority tasks of the reserve is the preservation and increase of the population of these animals.

Scientists of the Taimyr Nature Reserves united directorate are solving the problem of rational use of the richest biological resource on their territory. They advocate, among other things, the creation of a unified system for managing the wild reindeer population. It should also be noted that since 2020, the wild reindeer has been included in the Red Book of the Russian Federation as an animal endangered by extinction.

“Let’s save the reindeer together”, said the Lapland reserve. And they created an interactive educational space on the reindeer theme. The Kola specialists put forward their initiative in the competition of social projects of the charitable program World of New Opportunities. The Nornickel company supported the project with a grant. As well as the organization of other educational events aimed at increasing environmental literacy and culture. For example, equipping an observation deck on lake Elyavr.

The main symbol of the Lapland reserve – the wild reindeer – is placed in the center of the nature reserving organization’s logo. There is even a Reindeer Forest – an educational platform created on the Forest Pochemuchka eco-trail by the reserve’s partners, young designers.

In 2023, the Lapland reserve launched a new format of environmental and educational excursions – night ones and received an award from the Monchegorsk Development Agency in the Tourist Product of the Year category. Night excursions have become a real hit with visitors, especially guests from other regions of the country.

The reserve has repeatedly hosted regional gatherings of Nornickel corporate volunteers – participants of the environmental marathon Poneslos.
