#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. At the age of 85, State Duma deputy from Krasnoyarsk, Tuva and Hakassia, Hero of the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation, famous scientist and polar explorer Arthur Chilingarov has passed away.
A corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences devoted more than half a century to the study of the Arctic and Antarctic. Chilingarov led the most complex expeditions, large-scale projects that helped make a breakthrough in the development of the Arctic.
“He supported scientific and environmental projects, took an active part in the development of legislative initiatives, and showed an active interest in the development problems of the Siberian regions. We will preserve the grateful memory of this outstanding man and his services to Russia”, says a message on the website of the Krasnoyarsk region administration.
The website of the indigenous peoples of the North reports that Arthur Chilingarov, during the planning of a large continental expedition of the institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences Clean Arctic – East-77, supported the idea of assigning nameless geographical objects of the Russian North the names of outstanding scientists and organizations that contributed to the study of high latitudes.
On August 15, 2024, the expedition headquarters planned to send to Chilingarov’s office a list of geographical objects discovered by the expedition’s research parties with variant names for them.
“But we could not even imagine that the first on this list would be lake Arthur, named by scientists in honor of the departed polar explorer No. 1. Arthur Chilingarov has always been present in the lives of all modern researchers of the Arctic and Antarctic. And it’s hard to imagine that he’s gone. He just went on a new expedition. And wherever the route of his exploration party lies today, we know that it is led by the best of the pioneers”, the message says.
