International team made fastest round-the-world trip

August 20, 2024

The Icebreaker of Knowledge international expedition has arrived at its destination.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The fifth international scientific and educational expedition of Rosatom Icebreaker of Knowledge reached the North Pole on August 17 on the nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy.

The participants of the expedition delivered their countries’ flags to the top of the planet. Immediately after landing on the ice, the captain of the nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy Ruslan Sasov spoke to the expedition crew as part of the northernmost lecture series organized by the state corporation Rosatom together with the Russian society Knowledge.

“The Rosatom expedition Icebreaker of Knowledge is going according to plan. It is symbolic that the expedition participants reached the geographical point of the North Pole on August 17. Right on this day 47 years ago, the legendary icebreaker Arktika became the first vessel in the world to reach the top of the planet on a surface voyage. Today, representatives of 15 countries have completed the shortest round-the-world voyage to the pole. And then the international Arctic expedition of Rosatom, the Icebreaker of Knowledge, is heading to the Franz Josef Land archipelago”, said Ruslan Sasov, 50 Let Pobedy nuclear icebreaker captain, following the ceremonial event at the North Pole.

“This year, we are acting as an intellectual partner of the Icebreaker of Knowledge. We are filming a documentary series here, in the ocean, surrounded by ice, about the life of schoolchildren who were lucky enough to go on the voyage. Scientists and science popularizers speak to the participants right on board, on an open platform, as part of the northernmost lecture hall. This is a unique project, which, I am sure, will inspire all its participants to new achievements”, said Maxim Dreval, general director of the Russian society Znaniye (eng.: Knowledge).

During the expedition to the North Pole, the Russia-360 first continental expedition’s team Pro Puteshestvie conducted test trials of the all-terrain ATV Rys (eng.: Lynx) of domestic production.

“We’ve set two world records here at once. First, an ATV has reached the North Pole for the first time. And second, we have completed the fastest round-the-world trip on it here. Testing the ATV at the North Pole is part of the large expedition Russia-360, which is being held with the support of Russian president Vladimir Putin and the state corporation Rosatom. For me, this is the second achievement of the pole, but for the first time I managed to do it with such comfort on the nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy. In two years, in 2026, we plan to return here for the third time with an autonomous expedition on ATVs Rys”, said the head and author of the project Bogdan Bulychev.

The main team of the Arctic expedition Icebreaker of Knowledge is 63 talented schoolchildren, including ten participants from abroad – from countries where Rosatom is developing nuclear technologies. These are Armenia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Mongolia, Hungary, India, China, South Africa. Together with them, 15 experts – delegates selected at the World Youth Festival, which was held in the federal territory of Sirius in 2024 – went to the North Pole. Among them there are representatives of Cameroon, Iraq, Bangladesh, Tunisia, Belarus, Uzbekistan and other countries.
