The creation of an architectural and planning concept is an important stage in the program of social and economic development of Norilsk, stipulated by a quadripartite agreement between the government of the Russian Federation, the Krasnoyarsk region, the municipality and the Nornickel company.
Norilsk is the northernmost city in the world with a population of over 150 thousand people. It is one of the windiest and coldest cities on the planet. Winter lasts nine months here. In winter, thermometers drop below minus 50 degrees. Permafrost is located at a shallow depth from the earth surface, going down 300–500 meters. Pile foundations are used in the construction of buildings.
The contestants have a unique opportunity to breathe new life into the city and present the most modern ideas for its future development.
“Professional organizations are invited to participate in the field of integrated development of territories and urban planning, architecture, design, development of concepts for the public spaces development, master planning, capable of attracting specialists in the field of economics, finance, social modeling and content programming to the team”, said the Norilsk Development Agency specialists.
More than 40 architects, urban planners and urbanists from around the world have shown interest in the competition. Based on the results of the first stage, three finalists will be selected on the basis of a portfolio and an essay describing ideas. They will be engaged in the development of renovation concepts.
“When preparing tender proposals, it is necessary to take into account the uniqueness of the geographical location, climatic characteristics, historical features of the development, as well as a new vision of the territory”, the organizers noted.
The jury consists of Norilsk and Krasnoyarsk region authorities, Nornickel, Norilsk Development Agency representatives, experts in the field of integrated development of territories, ecology, economics and spatial planning, marketing and communications, technologies and innovations from Russia and abroad.
The total prize fund of the competition is 15.5 million rubles. Applications for participation are accepted until 12.00 Moscow time on September 21 on the official website of the contest norilsk2035.ru.
Let us recall that the initiators of the international competition are the city administration and the Norilsk Development Agency with the support of the Nornickel company. Operator is the international urban laboratory CENTER Lab.
