#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. During the polar winter, about 80 million cubic meters of snow falls in Norilsk. Every day, despite difficult weather conditions, our airport serves aircraft that arrive from different regions of Russia.
In the work of the polar air harbor, airfield service specialists take on a large load, capable of clearing the airfield covered with snow in a matter of minutes.
A specialized vehicle fleet helps the service brigades to keep the airfield apron clean and tidy. Now it has 15 units of equipment.
In many ways, these cars are similar to those that we see on the streets of Norilsk, but there is equipment that you will not see in the city. For example, the German Schmidt snowplow, based on the Mercedes-Benz chassis.
These premium-class machines are designed for patrol and high-speed snow removal in winter, the distribution of liquid and solid anti-icing agents and materials, and during the short northern summer, the machine is capable of washing the roadway under pressure.
In addition to snow removal, the specialists of the airfield service also monitor the icing, which interferes with the takeoff and landing of any aircraft.
When there are no heavy snowfalls, with a frequency of one to two hours, the service team checks the airfield condition and, if necessary, withdraws equipment.
Largely due to the correct organization of snow fighting (they say this term appeared in Norilsk, as well as ‘black blizzard’), today one of the northernmost airports in the world successfully operates in winter and is ready to receive aircraft at any time of the day.
