#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. While dismantling the non-working smelting shop of Kola MMC in the village of Nikel, workers found a historical inscription on the wall under the brickwork: “Death to the German invaders”. The management of the mining and metallurgical company promptly stopped work on this site. The situation is under the personal control of the Nornickel company’s vice-president – the general director of KGMK Alexander Leonov, kn51.ru reports. The issue with the museum is currently being resolved, and a historical assessment of this inscription is being given.
Recall that in 1941-1944, fierce battles took place in the Petsamo region (now the Pechenga district). In October 1944, the territory was cleared of invaders. During the retreat, German troops destroyed the metallurgical plant in the village and the village itself.
To establish the historical value of the inscription, Kola MMC contacted specialists from the Pechenga district museum of local history. Now specialists are determining the period of the inscription’s origin.
Kola MMC intends to preserve this wall, and all further actions are planned in strict accordance with the recommendations of specialists and experts. Together with historians and the district administration, Nornickel’s management is deciding whether to preserve the object on the territory of Kola MMC or to move it to a place accessible to visitors in order to preserve the inscription as an important part of historical memory.
Earlier, This Is Taimyr wrote that the Lenin monument from Norilsk was sent to the Moscow region for restoration.
