#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The rate of global ocean warming has almost doubled since 2005.
“Warming has been steadily increasing since the 1960s. And since about 2005, the rate of increase in ocean temperature has doubled”, oceanographer Karina von Schuckmann said at a video conference, presenting the organization’s report. According to her data, the water has warmed up to 1.05 W/sq. m from 0.58 W/sq. m.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), since 1970, the oceans have absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat in the climate system caused by large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions. Warming is also accompanied by an increase in marine heat waves, TASS writes.
According to scientists, about 22 percent of the world’s oceans experienced at least one severe heat wave in 2023. Heat waves are becoming longer, with the average maximum duration doubling from 20 to 40 days since 2008.
Oceanologists emphasized that ocean warming could lead to the formation of more powerful and destructive storms and hurricanes.
We previously reported that global warming will reduce the world’s fish stocks.
