#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In two reserves in Taimyr – Putoransky and Taimyrsky, as well as in the reserve Tungussky in Evenkia, a ‘forest census’ has begun. Experts examine in detail all vegetation and evaluate the quantitative and qualitative indicators of forest plantations.
They will explore nearly four million hectares, which is comparable to the area of Switzerland or Holland.
They began active preparations for field-testing last year: they collected the necessary information about the boundaries of objects, received materials for remote sensing of the earth, held forest inventory meetings and laid a training ground.
This year, specialists will examine in detail all vegetation, evaluate the quantitative and qualitative indicators of forest stands, for example, species composition, age, forest type, sanitary condition and average stock per hectare. In total, almost 510 thousand hectares of forests will be studied by land taxation methods.
Forest management on the territory of the Taimyrsky and Putoransky reserves is planned to be completed in December 2021, and in the Tungussky reserve – in December 2022. In a forest study last year, scientists found that 70 percent of the trees in Taimyr are Daurian larch.
