Food storage facilities to be created in Arctic

The famous Toll warehouse will be an example.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Russia plans to create food bases to supply residents of the Arctic regions. The issues of developing products enriched with useful substances and preserving them in permafrost were discussed at a conference dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the first laying of modern canned food in Toll’s warehouse and the 300th anniversary of the Russian Sciences Academy founding.

One of the scientists’ activities is the development of special products enriched with elements that are scarce in the Arctic. For example, dairy products containing iodocasein, writes Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

An optimal food storage system could be analogues of Toll’s warehouses, where food can be stored for decades without losing nutritional value, since it is never defrosted.

Let us remember that the warehouse of baron Eduard Toll was organized during the polar expedition of 1900–1902, which he led. During that expedition, at cape Depot, the researchers laid a batch of food in a small ice cavity. It was found by members of another expedition 73 years later, and, to the surprise of polar explorers and scientists, the reserves turned out to be suitable for food – they included tea, chocolate, crackers, sugar and 48 cans of canned meat.

From that moment on, a long experiment began, during which more and more modern products were brought to the warehouse in order to find out how long they would remain edible. Recently, the range of products stored in the Toll warehouse has become increasingly specialized – they include army rations, whey and fortified products.

In 2022, Natalia Huba’s expedition delivered more than 150 types of various products from Toll’s warehouse. Based on the laboratory studies’ results, scientists made recommendations on which products can be stored in storage for decades, and which will not last more than five to six years. Scientists have also found that the optimal depth for storing food is about two meters.

The Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) keeps records of existing natural cavities for storing products and searches for new ones. In 2050, they plan to remove the last reserves of meat from the Toll warehouse.

Earlier, we told how chocolate was preserved in Toll’s warehouse.
