#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The Floating University team on the research vessel Akademik Ioffe is setting off on another expedition – for 20 days, the scientists will study the natural complexes of the Baltic sea in the South-Eastern Baltic and the Gulf of Finland. The team includes 26 scientists and 22 students. For the first time, the organizers have selected four schoolchildren for the expedition this year based on the results of the winter school. Together with their mentors, they will work on real scientific problems.
The researchers will study changes in conditions in the Baltic sea under the influence of climate and tectonics, the composition, structure and quantitative indicators of zooplankton in different areas of the Baltic sea.
“The Baltic sea is undoubtedly one of the most studied seas in the world, so all the scientific research we conduct is multidisciplinary. Participants will have to learn to work in a team, and this is both the most difficult and the most amazing thing about the work of an oceanographer”, said the expedition head, senior researcher at the AO IO RAS Ekaterina Bubnova.
In total, five expeditions will be held this season as part of the all-Russian scientific and educational program Floating University. More than 100 future researchers will be able to join the expeditions this year thanks to the general selection of student participants from all over Russia.
Earlier, scientists collected samples of soil, water and plankton on Kolguyev island in the Arctic. This year, scientists from the Floating University searched for giant viruses for the first time.
